Wesley A.M.E Church History From 1921 - 2009
Prior to World War I, there was no Black church in Swarthmore, Pa. Many blacks lived and worked in Swarthmore, but there was no place for them to worship. Many of the residents joined churches in the surrounding communities: Chester, Media, Morton, Lansdowne and some in Philadelphia.
A Committee was formed to discuss the need of a Black church in Swarthmore. The meeting was held at Jones’ hall in Swarthmore. After much discussion, it was agreed there was indeed a need for a Black church in the community.
A second meeting was called early in September of 1921, Fourteen persons who were mostly members of Shorter A.M.E.C. of Morton, Pa. Attended. It was agreed that the Presiding Elder Elijah Byrd be contacted to explain to the Committee the necessary procedures involved in starting an African Methodist Episcopal Church in Swarthmore.
On October 26, 1921 Presiding Elder Byrd called a third meeting at which time the Church was organized. Those who attended the meeting were: Rev. Elijah Byrd, Rev. Samuel Wilson, Mr. Lewis Bowser, Mrs. Anne Brookfield, Mrs. Isabelle Camp, Mrs. Lizzie Handy, Mrs. Helen Colley, Mr. Daniel Hill, Mrs. Celia Johnson, Mrs. Rosalie Maddox, Mr. E. Abner. The mortgage burning took place in 1942 under the pastorate of Reverend M.H. Jones. The cost of the building was $11,400.00.
In 88 years, we have had the leadership of 26 pastors. Each one has made a significant contribution to our church. Under the leadership of our present pastor, Pastor C.
